Originally built in 1916 by Tom Bendelow, with renovations by Willie Park Jr., work on the South Course focused on restoring the original Golden Age character, while making modifications to accommodate modern design and playability standards.
Extensive research was conducted using historical aerials, ground-level photos, and historian accounts to identify key features to be restored, and re-introduce the strategy envisioned by the original architects. Many greens were expanded to bring back a classic design character and lost pin locations, and bunkers were referenced from historic photographs and adjusted for modern distances. Improvements were also made to site drainage and bunker infrastructure to improve overall conditions and playability, and shortgrass expansions and tree management projects were used to open up strategic angles of play, and instill an overall sense of connectivity.
Renovations were completed on the South Course in 2023, with a final design that is not only more reflective of its historical lineage, but also more playable, easier to maintain, and set up for long-term sustainability.
