Break Through the Noise!
As I write this quarterly, I have a number of things on my mind – creating value, telling great stories, working to get new business, and connecting with my friends and colleagues.
Hey!
Welcome to the latest installment of the Staples Golf Design Quarterly, v2.2019! My computer reminded me today that I'm a week late in releasing my newsletter – Yatzee!! As I write this quarterly, I have a number of things on my mind – creating value, telling great stories, working to get new business, and connecting with my friends and colleagues. Companies find it increasingly important these days to figure out how to “break through the noise” of our daily lives; with that said, here’s my attempt to do just that. Enjoy!25 Years in the Golf Biz!
I realized a few weeks ago this summer marks 25 years in the golf biz. It’s was at Green Bay CC in WI that I began my first job huckin’ drain-pipe and running irrigation wire for Wadsworth Golf Construction. Honestly though, it feels like I’m just getting my feet wet! #25moretogo
Filling the Pipeline
As I’ve said in the past, one of the hardest things to do when you’re busy is to keep the prospects list juiced! Andrew is killing it, and our pipeline is as full as it’s ever been since I’ve been on my own! #Schwing #LetsGo
Speaking of New Assignments...
I'm very excited to report we'll be doing some general consulting work at Arizona Country Club, Phoenix, AZ and a full master plan for 27 holes at Timber Creek Golf Course, Roseville, CA. Yes!!
Break Through the Noise??
I try my best to share interesting articles or concepts that resonate with me. So on that note, I need to include the incredible news of my brother Tim releasing a book that relates directly to our business. How do you break through the “noise” in business? Take a listen to my brother Tim’s podcast with Cal Fussman, or better yet... buy his book here! Let’s all tell great stories!
Bunkers at FireRock
New bunkers, turf reduction, and native waste-area expansion is about 50% complete and they're looking incredible! The plan is to open this year after the winter overseeding in October.
Sketching
My latest impulse purchase, er… equipment upgrade, happens to be a new iPad mini with a touchscreen pen. I’m blown away by this tech– these sketching programs are as close to the real thing as it gets.
Olympia Fields Update
I’ve begun to make visits to Chicagoland the past few months to meet with the Master Planning committee regarding my vision for the South Course. Design plans will begin flowing this month, and I'm pumped about our direction and ideas!
University Club Wraps-up Phase 1!
After a very wet fall of ‘18, and a seemingly wetter spring this year, the work on the comprehensive practice facility, in partnership with Marquette University, is finito! The pic below is of the new practice area/wedge range just before seeding (drone image compliments of Golf Creations).
A Run Around Rockwind
We took some time last week to visit Rockwind Community Links in Hobbs, NM, to grab some cool drone footage. Click the pic below if you want to check it out!
Mill Valley's Community Influencers
One of the major ways our design business has evolved is related to how we generate community “influencers” while building support for our projects. At Mill Valley, steam is building from local support in a variety of ways including financial donations, pro-bono time, and awesome ju-ju! Poster credit goes to the Mill Valley Golf Club for securing this great donation!
The Community Links Foundation
On that note, Staples Golf is in the early stages of forming a non-profit foundation to help fund Community golf projects all over the country. Yes, that’s right- we’re starting a foundation! This is an idea we’ve had for some time, and could be a significant way to provide much needed assistance to the community golf market.
Family Time
I recently played Pelican Hill with my 9-year old son Luke on our July 4th vacation in So Cal. Nothing beats being on the links with your son (I have 3 of them, and I'm working on filling out our foursome!).
Your time is valuable, so thanks for hanging out with me until the end. We’ll be back here, same-time, same-place next Quarterly! I hope you have a great summer and don’t forget to play more golf.
All the best,
Andy Staples, ASGCA
